In this article, I will explain how to stay motivated by giving 9 ways that will help you focus on your goals. Follow these steps, always stay motivated, accomplish your goals, reach success, and live the dream life you’ve always wanted.

A while ago, I wrote this article about self-motivation. In that article, I explained my own self-motivation system by hoping it will encourage people who are struggling with a lack of motivation. Writing about my system had another effect on me. One more time, I started to wonder about other ways to always stay motivated.

After a while, my desire to explore new ways to get self-motivated took me to the place where I can find everything, Google. I started to search for different ways to stay motivated. Thanks to hundreds of people who are sharing their experiences to help others, I’ve found new ways. And, I wanted to include myself in this community.

Short story long, I searched, read, watched and as a result, I came up with this ultimate list. Below, I’ll share 9 effective ways that will help you to crush your lack of motivation and always stay motivated.

How To Stay Motivated – 9 Ways

When it comes to motivation, we usually miss a point. For most of us, motivation is the endpoint. I mean, we expect that motivation will find us. We hope that it will come from somewhere else. We like the idea of looking to the east on the first light of the fifth day and finally, Gandalf will give us some motivation.

However, and unfortunately, the reality is quite different. Motivation is not something magical. So, finding it is not a miracle. Motivation is about breaking bad habits. If you can manage to break your bad habits, you can always stay motivated.

If you check my own system, you will see my continuous effort to keep myself motivated towards my goals. So actually, motivation is the start point. I mean, you don’t find motivation, you build motivation through your journey.

1-Three Questions to Ask Yourself

The first thing is first. To always stay motivated, you should change your perspective and stop seeing things as requirements. What you need is to see things as opportunities. Being mindful of the choices you are making is the way to feel empowered. So, ask these 3 questions to yourself before you run after a dream (a task, a goal, a target…):

  • Can you do it?
  • Will it work?
  • Is it worth it?

If the answer is “yes” for all of these questions, then great. Self-motivation will be easier through your journey. But don’t forget. You have to be honest with yourself. You have to give the right answers. And most importantly, you have to stop letting other people’s opinions color your reality.

Actually, before you give an answer, you should dream what a win looks like for you. What brings you more joy in life? Your marriage? Your business? More money? Strong family relationships..? Giving answers to those 3 questions accordingly will help you to be honest yourself.

2-Have A Plan

Planning is an underestimated skill. No, I am not talking about making plans in your head. I am talking about taking it seriously. And if you take it seriously, you can always stay motivated. Here how it has to happen.

First, you will sit and take a pen and paper (or a laptop). Then, you will start to write down your big goals. You turned your plans into reality.

Second, you will start to break down your big goals into small, achievable goals. For example, if you want to have a clean home, you will need to clean your home for 1 hour every day.

Congrats! Now, you know the steps you need to take in order to achieve your ultimate goal. Not just knowing this but turning it into something real will help you to stay motivated.

Sounds quite simple, right? Yes, it is. It doesn’t just sound quite simple, it is quite simple in real too. However, we usually procrastinate to have a plan. The reasons can vary. Fear of failure, being a last-minute (or crisis) hero, being a perfectionist…

I don’t know which type of procrastinator you are but I know one thing, you should stop it. Otherwise, you will be drowned in a lack of motivation.

3-Be Aware Of The Process

Nothing more powerful than results. Because when you see the results you know that you have the control. And knowing this is a certain solution to stay motivated. This way, either you will stop procrastinating and work on your goals immediately or you will see you are not working at all and start working on your goals immediately. Both scenarios work!

You might ask why do you need to track your progress if you already know you work every day. Because we forget. Yes, sad but true. No matter how we are proud of being the only rational creatures on the earth, we usually forget the efforts that we put. Then blaming ourselves comes.

4-Reward Yourself

Having a regular system to reward yourself is quite important if you want to always stay motivated. And there is a reason behind it.

As we all know, bad habits have immediate rewards. For example, if you smoke, your body will take the nicotine immediately and send a reward signal to your brain. Even though you are going to regret smoking months or years later, at that very moment, you are happy.

Now let’s think about good habits. For example, if you decide to quit smoke, your body will suffer at least 3 weeks and send bad signals to your brain. Even though you will be thankful for your decision months or years later, at that very moment, you are not happy.

So, yes. You should find ways to give yourself immediate rewards for your good habits. No matter how hard you need to work on your goals, you need regular breaks. Are you trying to quit smoke, great! You might give a break to yourself by buying that game console you always wanted. Do you want to earn money from your blog, perfect! But don’t forget to take one day off per week.

I gave examples from my experience and I can’t know what can work for you perfectly. I know one thing though, you need to reward yourself, regularly.

5-Warnings Works, But Not That Much

So, will you keep rewarding yourself even though you fail at something? Of course not. Warnings are working too. But not that much.

Research shows that warnings have a very limited impact on behavior. Graphic images on cigarette packages, for example, do not deter smokers from smoking. Moreover, one study found that, after looking at those images, quitting actually became a lower priority for smokers.

And there is a reason behind this behavior too. Psychologically, we are willing to listen to positive feedbacks more than negative ones. We want to take the information we want to hear. And once we start to hear something that makes us uncomfortable, we resist listening.

As a result, we can say that warnings will have a very limited impact on your journey. However, we need warnings too. At least we need to see them. And this taking us back to this section. Being aware of the process is not only about ups. This approach helps you to see downs as well. Thus, you can motivate yourself to keep going when you want to quit.

6-Accept The Journey

Self-motivation is not only about showing yourself physical proofs. You need to prepare yourself mentally as well. However, there is an obstacle that stands in front of us: Fear of failure. You should accept the journey to destroy it. 

Change your perspective about failure. Nothing is perfect. There will be always some mistakes, downs, critical situations… Therefore, you’ll fail.

This is not something I am saying just to ease you. For real, failure is the perfect data stream. And you need data to give better decisions on your goals.

Fall in love with the process.

7-Watch Your Competitors

Even though we say the opposite to ourselves, what others do is important for us. Because we want to do the same things others do. And we want to do it better. You don’t have to say this to anyone out loud. However, you need to accept that you should watch your competitors.

Follow them from Twitter, stalk them on Instagram, check what are they sharing on LinkedIn, read their blogs. Because successful people (your competitors) always share their accomplishments. The more you expose yourself to these things, the more you stay motivated towards your goals.

8-Train Yourself, Not Educate

I am not saying education is sucks. Pure education sucks though. Because you can’t learn anything by only following educational materials. This approach is static, not engaging, and boring. What is worse is most of the time you don’t know what you want to learn.

I’ll explain this with an example.

Let’s say you want to learn to code. You started to watch videos and read blogs but it is not going anywhere. You are not able to understand that magical world. And finally, you lost your motivation. Because your approach is wrong.

But if you’d start to learn to code by imagining what you want to do with it, you’d know what questions to ask and research about them. Voila! Now, you keep searching and watching and practicing your coding skills.

Do you know when you know what you want to learn? When you know what you want to ask. And this is happening if you train yourself. And if you train yourself, you stay motivated always.

9-Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle

Last but not least….  All the ways that I listed above that will help you to stay motivated depend on your physical and mental health. And if you want to keep going no matter what your situation is, these three are hugely important:

People will understand the importance of them in upcoming years more and more. And I am giving you the tip in advance. Watch out for your diet, exercise, and sleep routine, and always stay motivated.
