I Want To Change The World

I want to change the world. This is a desire I feel inside me ever since I could remember myself. I’ve always wanted to change bad things around me and turn them into something good. I was always pushing so hard to change the world, the people around me, the environment I am living in…

It took so much time for me to understand that I can’t change the world. After 30 years, I started to notice nasty truth. No matter what I did to change the bad things around me, they were growing bigger than ever before. Like a snowball. Every single day was worse than the day before.

After a painful discovery period, I accepted reality. I will never be able to change the world. It was a huge disappointment for me and I felt stuck.

Fortunately, during these eureka moments in my early thirties, I also realized something else that makes my pain bearable. I might not be able to change the world, ever but I could change myself. And this was definitely the best option to reach my dreams.

I changed my perspective and started to see it as a butterfly effect, or domino stones. I needed to have a beginning point to change something. And in this situation, this beginning point was me.

It was simple: If I change myself, I could change everything around me. I finally got rid of the stuck feeling that I was having. Because I knew that I found a way to change the world!

Why I Wrote This Article?

I know you want to change the world too. This is why I decided to write this article. I wanted to share my experience with you. I wanted to let you know there is a way to change the world and make it a better place for us.

I wanted to share my secret recipe with you: If you want to change the world you need to change yourself first. You need to be a good example to the people around you. This will have a butterfly effect.

I know, the things I am doing to change the world are not too much. But I believe this will be like a snowball if I can manage to reach the people. And the things that I am doing will create big differences even though I don’t see myself on TV screens while speaking about climate change, wars, hunger problems, etc…

I don’t want to be an advertisement face of any charity event anyway. What I want is to contribute. I do want to change the world and I do want to do things that really matter, that have real effects, that can inspire the people around me and the people I reached through this article.

Things I Changed

The list what i changed

I Stopped Wasting The Water

After I decided to act on changing the world more than ever before, the very first thing that I did was to list the things that I could change immediately. And this one took the first spot with no surprise. Because anyone can stop wasting water easily by being a little bit more careful.

  • I could stop taking long showers.
  • I could stop leaving the tap open while brushing my teeth.
  • I could stop washing dishes and let the machine do the work.
  • I could stop washing clothes often and put a schedule for it.

I did all of them. I still take shower every day, but I limit the amount of time. I take quicks showers now. I get used to turning off the tap when I don’t need the water. I stopped washing dishes and started to use the washing machine more often. I put the schedule for dirty clothes and now I wash them once a week.

These were the things I was doing and wasting the water. In addition to all of them, you can stop doing the things that I listed below in case you do them.

  • Stop cleaning your car often. And when you need to clean your car, use automatic washing machines.
  • Stop filling the kettle just for a cup of coffee.
  • Use a water bottle for your plants.
  • Stop being lazy and fix leaks.

I Started To Buy Clothes Consciously

I have never been addicted to shopping. But also, I have never been conscious of what I was buying. Because I was thinking it would be enough to buy quality clothes to save children and animals. I never checked where they were coming from or what material they use to produce clothes.

Now, besides the quality of the clothes, I check where they are coming from before I buy them. I don’t buy anything produced in a developing country. Because I know they are using children to produce clothes. Also, I don’t buy anything made with real fur or leather. Because I know they harm animals and pollute water.

Meanwhile, I encourage my friends to do the same. I raise awareness while I talk with my friends. I give brand names and explain why they need to stop buying clothes from such companies.

I Started To Have Empathy, More Than Before

I was always trying to show empathy. I like to listen to people’s problems and understand what they are going through. I started to do this more than before. Because I noticed that I needed to listen effectively to what they are saying to me if I want to change myself.

So, I started to show more empathy, especially in the workplace. I pushed myself to understand what my peers are trying to explain to me. This helped me to see my improvement points and turn our workplace into a place everyone can enjoy while working.

This was easy to do in the office. But when it comes to special relationships, having empathy is not that easy. Everyone has bigger expectations from their closest ones. So, I still struggle with it. But I push myself to improve. Because I know, if I want to change the world, I need help.

I Started To Love Myself

There is no way to change something without love. This is the rule of the universe. There is nothing different when it comes to changing the world. And you need to start spreading love from yourself if you want to have a positive effect on the earth.

I knew this before. But unfortunately, I couldn’t manage to stop having doubts about myself. Until I figured out I won’t be able to change anything if I don’t love myself enough. So, I focused on myself and tried to understand my needs. Then, I took actions that will help me to love myself more than before.

This way of thinking helped me to see things clearly and I found more space for the things I want to do to change the environment around me.

I Raised My Voice

Until I noticed the facts, I was just a poor boy. Easy come easy go. A little high, little low. Any way the wind blows didn’t really matter to me. Because I thought naturally every person is responsible to be their very best all the time. But I was wrong.

The reality is the exact opposite. People are inherently selfish. They don’t even realize it. Don’t misunderstand me, I am not saying selfishness wrong. Actually, it is something you need to do to take care of yourself. But people need to know where to stop. Unfortunately, they don’t know.

This is why I decided to raise my voice for the things that I see go wrong. I started to object to anything I see harm someone, Including myself.

I Push Myself To Be My Very Best

Whilst I was pushing people to be their very best, I did the same thing for myself too. Because I knew that if I could manage to be my very best all the time, people around me will take me as an example.

So, I started every day on the positive side no matter what the situation is. And I saw the result immediately. Because positivity is contagious.

I Push People To Communicate

People are having misunderstandings just because they don’t communicate enough. And this makes the world a complicated place. This is why I started to push people around me to communicate more. Not only with me, but with people around them also.

I did this in the workplace. As a manager, I used every chance that will make people communicate. So they can grow the relationship, fix the problems, and turn the workplace into a better place.

The Result

Before, I was just talking about how bad we are behaving to the world. I was nagging about the things that we need to change to save the world from a disaster.

  • I was always saying that we need to stop wasting water. But I never stopped wasting water.
  • I was always saying that we need to live with values. But I was cheating on my values.
  • I was always saying that we need to live a simple life. But I was never acting on it.

Finally, I stopped talking and started to take action about things I was only talking about. The result? Not too much. But at least I see the change around me. And I hope it will get bigger day by day.
